"To become an elite leadership institute that produces national class youth leaders of caliber by 2030."
IDO aims to become an elite leadership institute that produces national class youth leaders of caliber by 2030.

IDO History

How the Dato’ Onn Institute Was Born.

Institut Dato’ Onn (IDO), formerly known as Institut Kepimpinan dan Latihan Semangat Dato’ Onn (IKLAS) was created to achieve a crucial goal: ensuring that Johor and Malaysia at large is run by pragmatic youth leaders of caliber.

Since its inception on January 19th 2000, IKLAS has consistently place a high level of commitment to nurture leaders in a variety of sectors, particularly those in the field of politics, economy, and community building, as the institute fervently believes that individuals who possess deep historical insight and strong ethics will become the gatekeepers of the sovereignty of Johor and the country.

That commitment continues on as the institute has undergone a rebranding to become IDO while also becoming the Johor State Government’s spokesperson and medium to spread its messages and initiatives to various layers of society. Now, IDO has transformed into a Junior Leadership School, as its capabilities of becoming a catalyst for young leaders is recognised by Chief Minister Dato’ Onn Hafiz bin Ghazi.

The institute now serves as a crucible for budding talent to be honed, and by 2030, produce national class youth leaders who will take the reins and steer it towards the betterment of Johor and the country.

Director's Note

Dear Friends and Partners,

It is with great pleasure that I write this note as the Director of Institut Dato’ Onn (IDO), a leadership school that is undergoing a transformation to meet the needs of Johor and Malaysia in producing national class youth leaders by 2030. I am humbled and grateful for the trust and support extended by the Chief Minister of Johor, who has generously doubled our program budget to reflect the confidence in our shared vision.

At IDO, we believe that leadership is not just a trait that one is born with, but a skill that MUST be developed with the right training and guidance. Our challenge is to find the right talents who are willing to contribute back to Johor and Malaysia, and to provide them with the resources and opportunities to grow into wise, humble, visionary, courageous and inclusive leaders.

We understand that not many organizations have the resources to invest in youth leadership at this scale, but we believe that the chance to shape a leader who embodies Johor values and the right skills will accelerate the progress of Johor and Malaysia. We hope that our alumni will continue to bring our good name everywhere they go and contribute to the development of our nation.

I also would like to call upon friends and partners who echoes our philosophy to come forward and collaborate wherever possible with IDO. I always believe that some people at a certain point of time in the history of mankind are just designed and bestowed upon opportunities to do hard things to serve its purpose – to make a difference. I would like to believe we are those people. And we need all the help we can.

Thank you for joining us on this journey of transforming IDO into an elite institution producing national class youth leaders for Johor by 2030. Let us work relentlessly together.

Warm regards,
Gadaffie Aziz
